The history of Mykolaiv is the history of people who built the city from scratch. In particular, Bulgarian immigrants who left a noticeable mark on the development of the region.

In 1802, residents of Thrace, fleeing from the Kyrgyz robbers, settled on the banks of the Ingul River – where Ternivka is today. In a short time, they created successful farms, developed weaving, and local limestone became one of the key building materials from which Mykolaiv grew.

Among the descendants of these colonists is the outstanding scientist and rector of the Admiral Makarov National Shipbuilding University, Viktor Buznyk, who made a significant contribution to the development of world shipbuilding.

This is an example of how human potential, entrepreneurship and resilience shape the economy and identity of the territory and how historical heritage influences the development of the community today.

The video was created as part of the project “What is Mykolaiv about? The Polyethnic South”, which is implemented by the MY ART Platform in partnership with the Mykolaiv Development Agency and the Mykolaiv Crisis Media Center with the support of Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung Ukraine.
