Seminar for student architects: the impact of climate change on designing the future

January 17, 2025

A unique seminar on the role of architecture in the face of climate change was recently held. The event was organized as part of the Youth Climate Action Fund project with the support of Bloomberg.

Lecturer: Mariia Tokar, a scientist and expert in architecture at the Mykolaiv Recovery and Development Office at the Mykolaiv Development Agency, shared her experience and knowledge.

The seminar consisted of two parts:

1. Analysis of the 2024 World Report on extreme weather events and their impact on the urban environment.

2. Practical introduction to design methods in the face of climate change. The workshop considered 10 modern approaches already used by British architects.

The key idea of the seminar was the concept of contextual design, which is based on “climate design”. This approach uses the potential of local climatic conditions to create sustainable buildings and spaces that minimize the negative impact of extreme weather events and protect residents from the challenges of the future.

A special guest of the event, Chief Architect of Mykolaiv Yevhen Polyakov, emphasized the importance of international cooperation and the adaptation of new design techniques.

The practical block was accompanied by graphic materials and research maps, which helped students better understand current challenges and find innovative solutions for their own projects.

This seminar was an important step towards the formation of new approaches in architecture that will help adapt to climate change.

Building a sustainable future together!
