The project was implemented by GIZ Ukraine in cooperation with experts from the Recovery Office. Three socially important facilities — two hospitals and a central service center — are now equipped with solar panels and batteries thanks to support from Germany and the EU. This allows them to remain energy independent and ensure stable operation even during power outages.
“In times of today’s power outages, creating energy independence at social infrastructure facilities is extremely important. Thanks to our partners, today we have launched three power plants: two of them at healthcare facilities, and one at the administrative center, where services are provided to city residents. The plants are already connected to the network and provide constant power, which will allow them to work uninterruptedly and, as a bonus, save money on electricity bills,” said Deputy Mayor of Mykolaiv Serhii Koreniev.
A plant with 408 solar panels with a capacity of 165 kW and 6 inverters of 25 kW each has been installed at one of the hospitals. Another hospital has 272 panels that produce up to 110 kW of energy and have 4 inverters of 25 kW each. And the ASC of one of the districts received 68 panels with a capacity of 27.5 kW, a 25 kW network inverter, 10 batteries with a capacity of 53 kWh, and a 12 kW stand-alone inverter.
The project, which was developed by Daniel Bodu, a green transition expert at the Mykolaiv Community Recovery and Development Office, involves monitoring the energy produced and consumed online. Hospitals and ASNs will be able to cover up to 20% of their needs in the cold months and up to 75% in the warm months.
“We are helping to strengthen the energy resilience of communities in wartime. Additional power sources will allow hospitals and ASNs to be energy independent, providing medical and social services during power outages, as well as saving energy costs,” said René von Prondzinski, Head of the Social Infrastructure Restoration Component of the GIZ project “Special Support Programme for Ukraine / EU4ResilientRegions”.
